EDC 484 IPlan Peer Evaluation

Teachers in Rhode Island currently maintain their certification by showing evidence of continuous professional development. Creating an IPlan and reviewing the IPlan of a peer is a unit-wide assignment in the School of Education for all student teachers. The steps below are designed to guide you through this process so that we can complete it efficiently.

  • Review your journal entry about your school's improvement goals.
  • Complete a self assessment of your teaching.
    • Download this URI Self Evaluation
    • Complete the form based on one of the lessons you taught last week. Be sure to write down specific evidence from either your lesson plan or your memory of your enactment for each assessment you give.
    • Use a highlighter to identify areas of your teaching/lesson that were either below standard or that you feel needs improvement
  • Synthesize your review by completing the following table as best your can:

What is the need?
How will improvement help your students?
How will improvement help your school?
RIBT Standard/Element Addressed?
1.
To strengthen my level of content knowledge
I will be able to improve the labs/activities that I create in order for students to learn and apply scientific concepts, utilize higher level thinking skills and have the opportunity to act as "scientists" in the classroom.
This will help students achieve higher proficiency on the NECAP Science test as students will know how to apply the concepts they learn in my class as well as answer level 3 or 4 DOK questions.
Standards 1 & 2
2.
To increase my level of awareness & knowlege of the most updated application & advancements in the bio industry
I will be able to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world by helping students make connections between content knowledge and application of it.
This will help students find relevancy in the content topics by making connections to the real world. Authentic learning strategies can help students acheive higher proficiency in the classroom as well as the NECAP test results. Furthermore, introducing industry applications of content knowledge will provide a window for students to explore various career paths within the field of biology.
Standards 1 & 2

Formulate a professional development goal based the needs that you have identified. This goal should be:
  • measurable/observable
  • should lead to improvement of teaching, student achievement, and/or improvement of learning environment.
  • should describe new knowledge or skills that you will acquire and how that knowledge/skill will affect the school/district setting.
  • linked to applicable Rhode Island Beginning Teacher Standards and elements, e.g. RIBTS 2.4.

In the space below, describe your professional development goal. In a second paragraph, use the information above to provide a rationale for your goal by explaining the personal need that it will address as well as how addressing this goal benefits your students and your school.

I. Professional Development Goal

My professional development goal is to strengthen my content knowledge in combination with an ongoing effort to stay well informed with regard to the most recent advancements and applications in the field of biology. I will achieve my goal by attending local lectures, seminars and pd sessions in addition to reading the secondary sources in addition to scientific journals, articles and news reports that pertain to the field of science. This goal is measurable and will be reflected in my teaching by developing lesson plans, higher level questions, activities, labs as well as Power Point presentations. Each unit should contain a lesson that ties in the subject matter to what is happening in society. I will engage in self-evaluation at the end of each lesson to make sure my teaching/pedagogy goals have been met. I believe that self-reflection is one of the most important aspects of teaching. During this period, I will identify at least 3 examples that were used in my lessons that bridge the gap between the content material used in the classroom and the application of it used in the real world.

Achieving my professional development goal will enable me to bridge the gap between the classroom and the real world by aiding students in making relevant connections. This will allow students to engage in meaningful learning by utilizing authentic learning strategies to acheive higher proficiency in the classroom as well as the NECAP test results. Furthermore, introducing industry applications of content knowledge will provide a window for students to explore various career paths within the field of biology.

Based on what you have found out, write a 1-2 paragraph narrative outlining at least two ways (PD categories) you will engage in engage in by the end of your first year of teaching. For each activity, explain how you think it will address the need that you have identified.

II. Professional Development Plan

In the upcoming year, there are two PD Classes that will help broaden my content knowledge as well as the application of it in the real world. The first is the "Flying Wild" seminar at the Audobon Society in Bristol, RI on 3/20/10 and the second is "Project Narragansett" loacted at Save the Bay in Providence, RI on 06/06/10. These seminars include lecture, work shops and field work. These two pd sessions will not only enable me to help my students to make connections to the real world but will add signficance to this as we are making connectings to ecosystems and wildlife in our state. I find that pd sessions as well as educational lectures often taking places at our local colleges and universities will help me achieve my goals.
